How to Search AToM

This guide provides instructions and tips to searching the UWRF Archives and ARC's online repository.

Precise Searching

For precise searching, use Boolean operators

Use AND in uppercase to include multiple words.

                School AND Ellsworth             

Use quotation “” marks to search for a phrase.

                “Winter Carnival”

Use * and ? symbols to search for wildcard and truncation characters.

Searching Falcon* will match and display results for Falcon and Falcons

Searching Wom?n will match and display results for woman and women

Use different terms for words, you can search all terms using OR in uppercase to include all terms.

                Car – Automobile

   Logging – Timber - Lumber

Using Search Filters

Filter your results by using the "Narrow your results by:" on the left side of the screen. 

Part of: Limits results by Collection.

Archival Institution: Limits results either for the University Archives or Area Research Center.

Creator: Limits results to only those where the name matches that of the creator associated with the collection.

Name: Limits results to those with a matching name added as a name access point to an archival description.

Place: Limits results to those with a matching place added as a place access point to an archival description.

Subject: Limits results to those with a matching subject added as a subject access point to an archival description.

Level of description:  Limits results to those that match the selected level of description (e.g. collection, series, file, item, etc.). Also includes a top-level description filter, which will limit to all collections regardless of level of description.

Media type: Limits results to those with a digital object attached that matches the selected media type (image, audio, text, video, or other)
