Copyright provides certain forms of protection to authors of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. It is based on federal law (title 17, U.S. Code) and provides an author two important protections: to control how a work is used and to obtain commercial benefit from a work.
